Social and economic benefits with the Morrison Cove Trails

Social and economic benefits with the Morrison Cove Trails would be extensive to the Miramichi. Regarding the youth in the community and surrounding areas, this project could give them a place to learn and grow. Morrison Cove Trails could help keep children busy and young members of the community interested in the outdoors and allow them to pursue new healthy hobbies and habits. The trail could be used for outreach activities, which could aid in lowering the amount of youth that turn to drugs and alcohol and a space to get them away from technology.

The Morrison Cove Trails provides an age-friendly outdoor space for the community. A study was conducted in Miramichi in 2018, which included members of the community in the age group of 55 plus, to answer a series of questions regarding what the Miramichi has to offer and what the city could benefit from. From the health and quality of life of older people portion of the survey, outdoor spaces and buildings were a top priority from respondents. “Age-friendly communities in both urban, rural and remote settings are essential components to not only the health and well-being of older people but to the broader communities of this province” (Students, 2018).

Northumberland County has a demographic population of 44, 952, this number does not include the many seasonal residents that come back to the Miramichi during the spring and summer months, as well as tourists that visit the Miramichi (Stats Canada, 2016). In 2009 the New Brunswick park visitor spending amount was $45.4 million dollars alone (Council, 2009). This number shows that tourists and people of New Brunswick are willing to spend the money on visiting outdoor spaces in New Brunswick and that the interest for these spaces is there. According to the Economic Impacts Associated with Expenditures by Canadian Park Agencies and Visitor Spending, the gross domestic product was $30.1 million, labor income $20.3 million, employment 646 full time employees and the tax benefit being $3.2 million in revenue (Council, 2009).
